Experience, often abbreviated to XP, is gained at the national, commander, and unit level.
National experience is gained during combat and training, including volunteer forces and lend-leased equipment. Some national focuses and ideas can also give national experience. There are three types of national experience: army, naval, and air. Storing of experience at national level is capped at 500.
Naval experience is used to create ship variants.
Air experience is used to create aircraft variants.

Commanders gain experience as the forces under their command engage in combat. There are no air commanders. However, air combat may generate Aces. Commanders have skill levels to indicate their gained experience. Each Skill Level of Army Commanders gives a flat +5% attack and +5% defense bonus. Each Skill Level of Naval Commanders gives a flat +5% naval hit chance and +2% fleet coordination bonus. The current advance to the next skill level can be seen by hovering over the skill level number. Commanders do not only gain experience but also traits during combat.
