Sweden is a minor nation in northern Europe. Sweden starts with a population of 6.24 million in the 1936 start date.

Historical background[edit]

Sweden stayed neutral throughout World War I and II, siding neither with the Axis nor the Allies. But Sweden did let trains carrying German soldiers and supplies go through the country to both Flag of Finland Finland and Flag of Norway Norway (the so-called Permittenttrafik) to avoid getting into a war with the Germans. Sweden was also the biggest supplier of iron ore to Flag of Germany Germany which is often discussed as a potential reason for its successful neutrality, with the metal provided accounting for about 58% of German supplies and 31% of British. The Swedish government allowed British access to its territory to ensure the delivery of the bearings through the German naval blockade. Sweden managed to de-crypt the German Geheimfernschreiber(considered more complicated then the famous enigma machine) in only two weeks on June 1940 and over the course of the war Sweden spied on German intelligence. In some rare cases Sweden actively supplied information to the allies about this. The most famous such act was when Sweden provided information to the United Kingdom about the upcoming Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. The British submitted the information further to Stalin who ignored it, with devastating results. Being a neutral country, tens of thousands of Jewish refugees fled to Sweden to escape the Nazi Holocaust.

Diplomacy[edit]

Alliances[edit]

At the 1936 start date Sweden has no alliances.

Events[edit]

Sweden can get the Finland Seeks Swedish Support event which will trigger when Finland is attacked by the Soviet Union after rejecting the Soviets' territorial demands. For this to happen however, Sweden must be at peace with Finland and must not be in a faction with the Soviet Union.

Refusing to help Finland will keep Sweden out of the war but will damage the relations between the two nations. Choosing to support Finland indirectly (the historical option) will transfer some manpower and equipment from Swedish stockpiles over to Finland. The final option will have Sweden abandon its neutral foreign policy and declare war on the Soviet Union. This will significantly improve relations between the two Nordic nations. The AI typically never chooses to actively join Finland in the war, instead opting for offering materiel support. If Sweden is Communism Communist, the AI will do nothing. However, if Finland becomes Democracy Democratic and Sweden's military is powerful enough, a joint Finnish-Swedish defense is likely to happen.

Finland Seeks Swedish Support

Our neighbor Finland has refused to give in to pressures from the Soviet Union, and the nations are now in a state of war. Although no formal alliance has been agreed upon between our countries, the Finnish government has requested that Sweden contribute to a joint defense of Åland, which remains largely Swedish-speaking and strategically important to both countries.

While the government remains divided on what steps we should take to help Finland, the public support for their defense is notable. How far are we willing to go to protect our fellow Nordic counties from eastern aggression?

Politics[edit]

Sweden begins with a National unitynational unity of 90%, one of the few nations that have such a high unity at the start.

National spirits[edit]

Sweden starts with two national spirits:

En Svensk Tiger icon
En Svensk Tiger
  • Ideology drift defense: +10%
  • Justify war goal on us: +10%
If Sweden is to be like a tiger on the prowl then those who spy on us must not know what we do. In these time of conflict and strife it is the patriotic duty of every Swede to keep silent.

  • Send volunteers tension limit: +20%
  • Guarantee tension limit: +100%
  • AI Modifier: Threat receptivity: +1%
  • AI Modifier: Desire to be in or expand a faction: −100
Neutrality is sometimes viewed as a craven stance, but this nation trusts that when the dust settles, those who didn't take sides may be better off than those who did.

National focus[edit]

Sweden isn't a major nation, and therefore uses the generic national focus tree.

Military Staff[edit]

These are the military staff candidates for appointment of Flag of Sweden Sweden. A considerable choice would be Olof Thörnell, an old guard of the Försvarsmakten, whom has shifting opinion to take the diplomatic approach over the use of force. An opinion that is not widely favoured by most military advisors as international tensions rose beyond sound reason.
